The Experience:

The Maine System includes the   River Maine and its main tributaries, the Little Maine and the Brown Flesk. There is 26 miles of river from Castlemaine to Scartaglen. The season starts on March 17th and permits are available from a number of outlets including Landers in Tralee, the River Island Hotel in Castleisland and Currow Post office.

Despite the fact that this river system has not been managed properly for many years it still produces good numbers of both salmon and sea trout throughout the season. It was closed by the IFI for a couple of seasons due to reduced stock numbers but has now fully re-opened again as a blue tag river. It has a quota of 1,700 fish in 2013. A fish counter has also been introduced on the river in recent years by the IFI.

Species & Fishing:

The Maine still gets a good run of sea trout and the fishing in the Brown Flesk for both sea trout and salmon can be excellent after a flood. The top months for sea trout are March and April and some good fish have been recorded in recent years. The weapons of choice for the angler here is the fly rod (double or single handed) and a spinning rod is also well worth having to hand depending on the water levels. All methods work well here with local knowledge adding greatly to your chances of catching a fish.

NOTE: The rights to this fishery are managed by the River Maine & Brown Flesk Anglers Association.

Access to the Maine is from Marshall's bridge on the N22 on theTralee side of Farranfore and Ballyfinnane Bridge about 4km downstream. There are a number of named pools in between. Access to the Brown Flesk is from the N23 road bridge near Kerry Airport.

Rules & Regulations:

All legal fishing methods are permitted on the river. The season runs from the 17th January to the 30th of September for salmon and 15th February to 12th October for Brown Trout. Please ensure you are fully up to date with the regulations that apply before starting to fish.
