The Experience:

This river is located in the heart of the sea trout country of the world renowned Lough Currane. A spate river with around 12 km of fishing this river really only fishes in high water conditions following a flood. It is mainly noted as a grilse salmon river with very few sea trout going through the river. Fish tend to run into the river from mid June on with the best of the fishing in September. The biggest fish tend to travel the river in September with fish of around 10lb being taken at this time when the conditions are right. This river can offer an ideal experience for a fisherman or woman interested in something different following time on the lake. The river runs down to the sea into Ballinskelligs bay on the Cahersiveen side of Waterville village.

Draining the mountains in the background, the river tends to be shallow and flat in low water but does offer some excellent fly fishing when conditions are right. In addition, spinning can also prove productive in catching the freshly run grilse. You can experience the mixture of both sea and mountain air as you work your way along this river and test your skills against nature as the conditions change quickly following the flood.

The weapons of choice for the angler here is the single handed fly rod or the spinning rod and the assistance of a local gillie can help ensure you find all the right lies during the short period that the river fishes during a flood. They will also help you with your fly selection.

All in all, this river is an ideal option for an angler wishing to experience the thrill of trying to coax a wily grilse onto the bank from a secluded lie while taking a break from trying to catch the specimen sea trout from nearby Lough Currane.
